The Seven Deadly Sins / Nanatsu no Taizai / 七つの大罪
"The Seven Deadly Sins" is a shounen action/fantasy manga that seems like it would be about as generic of a story as you could imagine something in this genre being. But only at first. It certainly clears that up quickly by introducing a world and a complex cast of characters that are anything but generic.
The Seven Deadly Sins were once an active group of knights in the region of Britannia, who disbanded after they supposedly plotted to overthrow the Liones Kingdom. Their supposed defeat came at the hands of the Holy Knights, but rumors continued to persist that they were still alive. Ten years later, the Holy Knights staged a coup d'etat and capture the king, becoming the new, tyrannical rulers of the kingdom. The third princess, Elizabeth, then starts on a journey to find the Seven Deadly Sins, and to enlist their help in taking back the kingdom.
Beginning with a meeting between a princess and a man with a childlike stature acting as a barkeeper, the manga begins with the duo deciding to find a powerful group of warriors known as "The Seven Deadly Sins" in order to defeat the evil that has overcome the kingdom's monarchy. What is soon revealed is that the barkeeper is no ordinary person, but actually the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas, the Sin of Wrath. He is a legendary (and might I add, incredibly overpowered) warrior who the Holy Knights of the kingdom of Britannia (yes, it's not a creative name) has claimed was responsible for the death of the Great Holy Knight. Holy Knights are basically the strongest protectors of a nation, and the Great Holy Knight is the strongest out of all of them. The Seven Deadly Sins were originally allied with the Holy Knights, but ten years ago, everything changed and the members split up as they fled from the Holy Knights. Now Meliodas and the princess named Elizabeth begin their search for the other Seven Deadly Sins. The characters, the world, the art, the mysteries. It's all excellently executed. Despite the beginning being a little slow, Elizabeth's uselessness, and some other issues here and there, this is one of the best shounen action stories I've seen in a while. (Thanks to Asfaria)

PlotEdit
A boy named Tōru Kokonoe decides that after losing someone precious in a terrifying incident, he wants to become stronger and enrolls in a special school where people manifest their souls as weapons called Blaze. Tor is capable of producing his own Blaze, but for some reason it manifests as a shield instead of a weapon.
CharactersEdit
Main characters
- Tōru Kokonoe (九重 透流 Kokonoe Tōru?)
- Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka[1]
- Tōru Kokonoe is the male protagonist ofAbsolute Duo. He is born in Fujisawa, Kanagawa. Tōru's motive for joining Kouryou Academy stems from the death of his little sister named Otoha (音羽?), and wanting revenge and the chance to get stronger. He is dubbed an Irregular for having a Blaze which is not in the form of an offensive weapon. Despite having a defensive shield as a Blaze, Tōru has learnt to use a powerful punch attack to use in conjunction with his Blaze. His name is written as Tor Kokonoe at the anime's official website and Funimation. As his name Tōru is pronounced in the same way as Thor in Japanese, Julie takes to calling him by the latter name.
- Julie Sigtuna (ユリエ・シグトゥーナ Yulieh Shigutūna?)
- Voiced by: Nozomi Yamamoto[1]
- One of the main female protagonists. She is a beautiful girl with silver hair and red eyes, who takes a liking towards Tōru and after some time she becomes his duo. She is from a foreign country named Gimlé inNorthern Europe as well as a princess. Her Blaze is a Sword Type, known as Twin Blades. The reason she came to Japan and enrolled to Kouryou Academy is because she wants to get stronger to avenge her family's death where the scar on her back serves as a reminder of such horrible incident where the killer is the same one whom Tōru has encountered a few years back, because of this she seeks out Tōru for help and to teach her his Final Move. Julie says "Yes" and "No" in Danish/Swedish/Norwegian: "Ja" (ヤーYā?) and "Nej" (ナイ Nai?). Her surname "Sigtuna" is also a the name of a Swedish town. Gimle is a place in a city called Roskilde, in Denmark.
- Tomoe Tachibana (橘 巴 Tachibana Tomoe?)
- Voiced by: Ayaka Suwa[1]
- One of the female protagonists and Tōru and Julie's classmate. She is a typical Yamato Nadeshiko, who is smart and talented. She cares very much about the people who are close to her especially Miyabi, whom despite of being weak still chooses her to form a duo. She is very much into martial arts and Shogi. She can never tolerate idly work, so she always wakes others when they're about to be late. She possesses a dignified atmosphere to think she is very mature. Being a vegetarian, she often gives Toru a plate of vegetables to maintain his stamina and power. Her Blaze is a Kusarigama.
- Miyabi Hotaka (穂高 みやび Hotaka Miyabi?)
- Voiced by: Ayaka Imamura[1]
- One of the female protagonists who is a buxom girl, she forms a Duo with Tomoe. She's also in Tōru's class and tends to be shy around others. She lacks stamina that keeps her from doing any physical activity for long periods of time. She eventually comes to realize she is in love with Toru. Her Blaze is a huge and heavy lance where it is capable of doing large scale destruction.
- Lilith Bristol (リーリス・ブリストル Rīrisu Burisutoru?)
- Voiced by: Haruka Yamazaki[1]
- A transfer student from England came from an affluent family. She is a very exceptional student whom at a young age has learned how to shoot and hunt, however, she is also selfish and arrogant. She went to Japan in order to form a duo with Tōru after hearing news about his capability, however much to her disappointment Toru declines. She later falls in love with Toru, and declares he will be her future husband and win his heart. Though she is officially enrolled in Kouryou Academy, she never attends class claiming that she had already finished her studies a long time ago which is why she prefers loitering around the school garden sipping tea with her confidant Sarah. As an Exception her Blaze is a rifle where she is a superb marksman and though she is armed with a weapon that she can fire from a distance, she is surprisingly very agile at close range where she can shot anybody at point blank range.
Other characters
- Sakuya Tsukumo (九十九 朔夜 Tsukumo Sakuya?)
- Voiced by: Yui Horie[2]
- The Chairman of Kouryou Academy, and is always seen wearing a Gothic Lolita dress. Her way of running the school is so ruthless that she actually encourages battle amongst the students.
- Rito Tsukimi (月見 璃兎 Tsukimi Rito?)
- Voiced by: Yukari Tamura[2]
- Tōru's homeroom teacher, who is always energetic and dresses like a maid with bunny ears, which greatly disturbs her entire class. She has two personalities; the first one is always childish and a happy person who likes calling her students various names, while the second is foul-mouthed, sadistic and ruthless where she doesn't think twice about attacking her students. Her Blaze is a sword.
- Imari Nagakura (永倉 伊万里 Nagakura Imari?)
- Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu[2]
- Imari is the first person Tōru talks to after entering the school. However, she is soon expelled from the school after losing against Tōru during the entrance ceremony's combat exam. Her Blaze consists of a single sword, which she wields like a katana. She reappeared when Tōru's class were sent to summer training camp at some remote island where Kouryou Academy has another branch, where students like her who failed the combat exam from the main branch where actually transferred there and were trained to become shinobis. She was also one of the greeting parties who ambushed Tōru's class the moment they arrived to the island.
